Epic introduced Upgrade Stations to Fortnite in Chapter 2 Season 1. Since then, they’ve been a fairly reliable way to ensure that you have the loadout that you want. Epic has tweaked the material requirements for upgrades to make them more common and could probably take this a step further, opening the door to more Upgrades and less RNG.
This article isn’t about material requirements for upgrades, however. It’s about an exploit that allows you to upgrade your weapons much faster than the normal process.
The most common – and most meaningful – upgrade is from Blue to Purple. This is also one of the longest upgrades to perform – nearly doubling the time it takes to upgrade a Green weapon to Blue.
There is a way to use this upgrade speed in your favor. Reddit user u/kewalts posted a trick on the r/FortniteBR subreddit that shows you how. The moderators have removed his post, for some reason, but he also uploaded the exploit to his YouTube channel.
We have to imagine that this exploit has been in the game since Chapter 2 began, but we haven’t seen it before. Based on the replies to the original post, most of you don’t know about it, either. The trick is simple: start upgrading an Uncommon weapon to Rare, then switch it for your Rare/Epic weapon at the last second. Instead of resetting the timer, the weapon will upgrade, automatically.
This is a relatively expensive trick to practice while in-game. We recommend getting the hang of it with some cheaper upgrades before moving onto the more expensive ones. As you can see from the clip, the exploit uses the materials from the more expensive upgrade; it’s not totally busted.
Since this has been in the game for so long, it could be an exploit that remains possible through Season 3. Either that, or it will be patched now that we and other outlets are drawing attention to it. Use it while you can!
