C9 has parted ways with its highly revered head coach.
Today, Cloud9 has announced that Bok “Reapered” Han-gyu has left the team. Reapered was with the team for four years and had many high highs as a coach. He helped bring C9 to multiple World Championships and won Coach of the Split in Spring 2020. He’s highly respected in the LCS and will be dearly missed by C9 fans.
Reapered is very respected among players and staff in the LCS. Earlier this year, Cloud9’s support Philippe “Vulcan” Laflamme talked about his respect for the coach, and its a sentiment echoed by others who have worked with him. As mentioned before, he was the 2020 Spring Coach of the Split, but also won the award in 2018 and 2019. This goes to show how much of an impact he’s had on the organization over the years.
His move to leave C9 is a surprising one to be sure. Although C9 did fail to make Worlds this year due to a rough Summer Split, they dominated Spring. Along with that, C9 confirmed that the current roster is staying intact for 2021. With that in mind, nobody foresaw that the coach that led them to so much success would leave while there’s so much potential for them in 2021. However, that’s sadly not the case.
Regardless, Reapered did say that he will look to continue his career as an LoL coach. Any organization would be lucky to have him join their ranks and would benefit greatly. On the other hand, there’s no word on who will replace Reapered on C9. It’s likely that Jonathan “Westrice” Nguyen will be promoted from assistant to head coach, but there’s no confirmation yet.
